3 Key Benefits of Proper Coolant Maintenance

Posted by Guy Flynn on Feb 8, 2019 10:23:45 AM

Many industrial and manufacturing processes require the use of coolant.

After all, coolant plays a critical role in both lubrication and temperature regulation. It’s vital in metalworking, machining and many other industrial processes—any that use or create heat.

From cutting, grinding and machining oil-coated metal parts, and because CNC machining centers leak hydraulic oil, coolant quickly picks up tramp oil, particulate matter and other impurities, mandating regular upkeep. Coolant often contains oil as an ingredient, but it is when hydraulic oil, oil that coats raw material, or other residual oils are introduced to the mixture that problems start to arise.

There are multiple aspects to proper coolant maintenance, but one of the most important is the regular removal of tramp oil, which can be achieved by implementing a an oil removal solution.

Read on to learn about the importance of proper coolant maintenance.

How the Continuous Removal of Tramp Oil Extends the Life of Coolants

Posted by Jim Petrucci on Dec 5, 2018 9:51:00 AM

Editor’s Note: This post was originally published in 2013 and has been updated for comprehensiveness.

Tramp oils (hydraulic oil, lubricating oil and greases, and protective metal coatings) in coolant create expensive and frustrating problems. Tramp oils in coolant provide a breeding ground for bacteria and can cause problems ranging from unpleasant odor to employee skin rashes.

When tramp oils combine with other contaminants in coolant, they can form a sticky substance that clogs lines and sprays. When they hit the tool, the cooling effect of the coolant is reduced, causing shorter tool life, product staining, inaccurate tolerances and a smoky atmosphere in the plant.

Advance Your Manufacturing Process with One Solution

Posted by David Cehlar on Sep 28, 2018 11:26:07 AM

Excess oil in manufacturing processes can have detrimental effects to overall operations, as it:

  • Shortens the life of machining coolant
  • Can result in costly equipment malfunctions and maintenance
  • Can affect the quality of finished parts

Fortunately, there is a solution.

Oil skimming can save manufacturers thousands of dollars in maintenance issues and ensure that finished products are the best quality possible.

Oil skimmers remove tramp oil from coolant or parts-washing solutions before it can cause problems downstream. The process is easy to execute, affordable and can provide multiple benefits to those in the manufacturing industry. Below, we’ve highlighted three key ways oil skimming directly contributes to a smoother manufacturing process.

When some think about oil on water, they think only of oil spills in open water. “But mixing oil and water is quite common in the manufacturing world,” Jim Petrucci says. “People who use water to any degree in manufacturing are going to get oil in it, whether it’s on purpose or by accident,” he explains.

When manufacturers want to remove the oil from the surface of the water, they turn to Oil Skimmers Inc. Petrucci is the vice president of the Cleveland-based company, which provides oil skimmers and oil removal systems to manufacturers, as well as power plants, food plants, mines and military bases.

Five Benefits of Continuous Oil Removal in Canmaking

Posted by Ken Gray on Feb 11, 2015 8:11:05 AM

The global demand for beverage cans will increase between two and three percent in 2015, according to a recent forecast by Alcoa, one of the world’s leading suppliers of aluminum canstock.

With the number of cans rolling off production lines fast approaching one-half trillion a year, canmakers are constantly challenged to optimize their plant operations. Each step of can manufacturing – from drawing and ironing to curing and finishing – offers opportunity for improvement. But let’s look at one element in particular that can make a huge difference in can quality and plant efficiency:  oil removal.
